Welcome to worship!

Over the past ten weeks, we've been asking one question: If Jesus is still leading His Church today... how does He do it?

Together we've discovered that the Holy Spirit gives every believer spiritual gifts—not to make much of ourselves, but to build up the Body of Christ. Some gifts reveal God's love. Others proclaim God's truth. And today we continue by looking at two of the most discussed—and often misunderstood—power gifts: tongues and interpretation.

Whenever these gifts are mentioned, opinions can be strong. Some have experienced them personally. Others have questions. Still others may have been taught they no longer exist. My prayer today is not that we would become more fascinated with spiritual gifts, but that we would become more captivated by the God who gives them.

Paul's concern in 1 Corinthians 12–14 is surprisingly simple. Every gift of the Holy Spirit has one purpose: to strengthen God's people. Whether through acts of service, words of encouragement, faithful teaching, prophetic insight, or Spirit-inspired prayer, God's desire is that His Church would be built up in faith, hope, and love.

Our bottom line today is: God's power is given for God's people.

As we open God's Word, may we approach it with humble hearts, eager to learn, willing to listen, and available for however the Holy Spirit desires to work in and through us for the good of His Church.

Thank you for worshiping with us. It is a joy to seek Jesus together.

All for Him!

Benediction

Life is much more than an accident.  Wherever I go, I believe God needs me there.  Wherever I am, I trust God has put me there.  He has a purpose for me being there - Christ, alive in me, wants to do something through me, no matter where I am.  I believe this and go in His grace and His love and His power.

The Power Gifts

Hearing God Personally: The Gift of Tongues and Interpretation

Acts 2:1-11

ONE SPIRIT. MANY GIFTS. ONE BODY.

The Holy Spirit gives different gifts to different believers so the whole church can work together as the Body of Christ.

POWER SERVES LOVE.

Every spiritual gift—including the power gifts—must be exercised in love because love is what gives every gift its purpose.

PRAY TO GOD. BUILD UP THE CHURCH.

Tongues are a Spirit-given language of prayer that builds up the believer, but when accompanied by interpretation they strengthen the entire church, while prophecy accomplishes that same goal through understandable speech.

EVERYTHING MUST STRENGTHEN THE CHURCH.

Whether through tongues, interpretation, prophecy, or any other gift, God's priority is orderly worship that builds up His people.

MAKE YOURSELF AVAILABLE.

Pursue Jesus, desire the Spirit's gifts, and make yourself available for God to use you to strengthen His Church.

Bottom Line:

"God's power is given for God's people."

Take it Home

5-Day Devotional and Prayer Focus

The Power Gifts — Tongues & Interpretation

Day 1 – Not for Everyone

Read: 1 Corinthians 12:27–31

Reflect: Have I believed all Christians must speak in tongues? How does this passage correct that?

Prayer: Spirit, free me from pressure and comparison about gifts. Amen.

Day 2 – Speaking to God

Read: 1 Corinthians 14:2–4

Reflect: What is tongues for, and who is it directed to? Where do I “run out of words” in prayer?

Prayer: Lord, deepen my prayer, with or without tongues. Amen.

Day 3 – Love First

Read: 1 Corinthians 13:1; 14:12,18–19

Reflect: Have I valued my own experience over what builds others up?

Prayer: Jesus, make love my first goal in using any gift. Amen.

Day 4 – Order and Interpretation

Read: 1 Corinthians 14:26–28

Reflect: Why are order and interpretation vital when tongues are used in church?

Prayer: God of peace, help our church use gifts in ways that build trust. Amen.

Day 5 – Welcoming, Not Fearing

Read: Acts 2:1–12; 1 Corinthians 14:39–40

Reflect: Where do fear or past hurts shape my view of tongues?

Prayer: Father, heal my reactions and help me welcome Your gifts wisely. Amen.
