Welcome to worship.

We’re glad you’re here today.

As we gather for worship, we continue our journey through Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount—words that speak clearly to who we are and why we are here. In today’s passage, Jesus reminds His followers that they are the salt of the earth and the light of the world. These are not suggestions or goals to achieve, but declarations of identity and purpose rooted in God’s grace.

John Wesley believed these teachings reveal what a life shaped by grace naturally becomes. When God changes us from the inside out, our lives begin to have an impact beyond ourselves. Faith is no longer something we hold privately, but something that shows up in how we live, love, and serve. Purpose flows from identity, not from striving or religious performance.

As you listen today, allow these words to speak to your heart. This is not a call to try harder or be better on your own strength. It is an invitation to live out who you already are in Christ—allowing His grace to shape you and His light to shine through you for the glory of God.

We’re thankful you’re here, whether this is your first visit or you’ve been part of this church family for many years. If you have questions or would like to get connected, please reach out to the charge office at 410-639-2144, or use the question cards in the pews.

May God meet us here today—renewing us, clarifying our purpose, and drawing us together as we follow Jesus.

In Christ,

Pastor Gary

Benediction

Life is much more than an accident.  Wherever I go, I believe God needs me there.  Wherever I am, I trust God has put me there.  He has a purpose for me being there - Christ, alive in me, wants to do something through me, no matter where I am.  I believe this and go in His grace and His love and His power.

Sermon Outline

The Law, The Heart, and the King

Matthew 5:17-20

The problem is not the Law — the problem is our HEART.

Matthew 5:17–18, Jeremiah 17:9, Romans 7:12

God’s law is holy; our hearts are not.

The Law exposes our SINFULNESS and our need for a Savior

Rom 3:19–20, Gal 3:24, James 1:23–25

The Law shows us what’s wrong but cannot make us right.

Our righteousness will never be GOOD enough.

Matthew 5:20, Isaiah 64:6, Phil 3:8–9

Even our best religious effort falls short of God’s standard.

Jesus becomes our righteousness through the GREAT EXCHANGE.

2 Cor 5:21, Rom 3:21–22, Rom 10:3–4

He takes our sin and gives us His righteousness by faith.

The Spirit writes the Law on our HEARTS so we can live it from the inside out.

Jeremiah 31:33, Ezekiel 36:26–27, Rom 8:4, Gal 5:6

Grace doesn’t remove obedience — it creates inward holiness that exceeds the Pharisees.

Bottom Line:

Grace does not lower God’s standard — it changes our hearts so we can finally live it.

Monday – Our Hearts: Lord, expose what is hidden within us. Cleanse us from pride and self-trust, and create in us a new and faithful heart. Psalm 51:10

Tuesday – Our Conviction: Holy God, let Your Word search us and reveal our sin. Lead us to repentance and draw us to the mercy found in Christ alone. Romans 3:20

Wednesday – Our Assurance: Savior, thank You for the great exchange. Clothe us in Your righteousness and quiet our fears with the promise of Your grace. 2 Corinthians 5:21

Thursday – Our Obedience: Spirit of God, empower us to love You by obeying Your commands. Make our obedience joyful, wholehearted, and rooted in love. Galatians 5:6

Friday – Christians Around the World: Faithful Father, strengthen believers who seek to live holy lives in hostile places. Guard their hearts and help them stand firm in righteousness. Romans 8:4
