Take it home:

Not only are our prayers not always answered in the way we want, but not everyone in the Bible got what they were praying for either. Read 2 Samuel 12:15-23 and Matthew 26:36-44 about two people praying desperately about critical issues, and then answer the following questions.

  • What surprises you about David's and/or Jesus’ behavior?

  • How is the balance between asking for what we want and deferring to God's will revealed in these stories?

  • Can you think of any ways these stories can be an encouragement to your prayer life?

  • How do you think faith and obedience relate to prayer?

We heard this weekend about the importance of saying thanks. All too often in life, we lack an attitude of gratitude, and as a result don’t say thanks enough. What can you learn about saying thanks from the story of the ten lepers in Luke 17:11-19?

  • Think of a recent difficult situation or trial in your life. How could you have specifically expressed thankfulness to God as a part of your prayers?

This week's text reminded us the need to value character over image. However, we live in a society that seems to value image, position, influence, and wealth over character. How do the following verses reinforce the importance of our character over our image?

  • 1 Samuel 16:7

  • Proverbs 4:23

  • Luke 6:43-44

This week's prayer focus:

  • Sunday - Our Mission: God, give us a deep passion for the work of Christ. Luke 4:18-19

  • Monday - Our Church: God, develop spiritual growth & maturity in Your church. Hebrews 5:12-14

  • Tuesday - Our Leadership: God, help our pastor proclaim Your Word boldly. 2 Timothy 4:2

  • Wednesday - Families: God, help couples be faithful to the marriage promises they made to You and to each other. Hebrews 13:4

  • Thursday - Our Community: God, we thank you for those who serve in our community. 1 John 3:16

  • Friday - Children/Youth: God, help our young people commit themselves to a life of purity of mind and body. Psalm 119:9-11

  • Saturday - Adults: God, help our adults find and fulfill Your purpose for their lives. Jeremiah 29:11-14

Merger Prayer Focus for the week: Transitions

  1. Pray for our merger team to communicate clearly with people who have sincere questions.

  2. Pray for those who fear what might be lost, to find peace through faith in Christ.

  3. Pray for excitement as we begin to consider new opportunities for ministry.

  4. Pray that our membership becomes bound to our mission rather than our buildings.

  5. Pray for the process of discerning what spaces our ministries require.

  6. Pray for an eagerness in our churches come together as one.
